Cassava Agronomist (Ref: DDG-R4D/CA/08/12)


Position/Responsibilities: The primary responsibilities of the Cassava Agronomist are to:
 Work with other team members to maintain the sustainable supply of cassava roots drive by targeted cassava starch/gari factories to increase the income and food security of small-scale farmers though the market created by the processing centres.

Specifically to:
Plan, lead, manage, and supervise all on-farm agronomic activities involving commercial cassava production in several states in Nigeria (Oyo, Ondo, Ekiti, Kogi, Niger, Abia etc)
Assist in implementing the Nigeria Cassava Transformation Agenda in the areas of stem distribution in 28 states and establishment of Demo and starch evaluation trials.
Assist in coordinating private-sector (Cosmo Farmers, GAVA International etc.) and State (Kogi, Jigawa, and Ebonyi) led Cassava Value Chain Initiatives.
Design and conduct on-farm Demonstration Trials on resources-use efficiency and cost of cassava root production. The latter compares mechanized and traditional methods of farming with a view to running a cost-benefit analysis of the 2 methods. Also expected to establish multiplication farms.
Select, cluster, mobilize, and train farmers on best agronomic practices, identify efficient service providers, make regular monitoring and evaluation visits and organize field days.
Assist in supervising the input-supply credit services for the farmers, and advise on the procurement of field materials/inputs through input dealers and service providers.
Ensure the timely implementation of all field activities such as land preparation, sourcing of planting materials, weeding, fertilizer application, and harvesting.
Supervise the collection of and analyses of all agronomic data, and write technical reports/scientific articles for peer-reviewed journals.
Contribute to proposal development and resource mobilization.

Duty Station: Ibadan, Nigeria. Frequent travel is expected and candidates should be willing to work in small-scale farm settings in Africa.


Qualifications/Experience:

Educational Qualifications
 The candidate should have a PhD degree in agronomy from a recognized university.

Core Competencies:
At least 8 years of post PhD experience in agronomy research.
Excellent knowledge of English.
Knowledge of farming systems in the Sudano-Sahelian Zone of West Africa.
Knowledge of the landscape of agricultural research institutions in the region.
Staff leadership experience.
Working experience in the CGIAR system is of advantage.

Personal/other qualifications: Excellent interpersonal skills, good ability to communicate with people in a multicultural setting; good verbal and written expression; good analytical and organizational skills; ability to take initiative.

Head of Communication (Ref: DDG-R4D/HC/09/12)


Position/Responsibilities:
Reporting to the DDG for Partnerships and Capacity Building, the primary responsibilities of the Head of Communication are to:
Manage and lead the Communication Office and its various units including management of budgets, operations, programmes, projects and activities, both at Headquarters and at the regional hubs.
Provide high level support to IITA management including oversight of the preparation of presentations, think pieces, articles and manuscripts for diverse fora and publications.
Design and implement communication strategies, plans and campaigns to promote IITA R4D activities and development impacts to target audiences, as well as monitoring and evaluation of such strategies and plans.
Identify opportunities for public relations and media campaigns, and oversee such campaigns with relevant background information on IITA.
Correlate policy and activities to improve all aspects of communication within IITA in particular those which require an organisation wide approach.
Oversight of both proactive and reactive media relations.
Develop and implement training and development initiatives aimed at improving communications.
Oversee the enhancement of access to R4D knowledge through various media, tools and approaches.
Liaison with stakeholders, donors and partner organisations on relevant communication issues.
Oversee the development of organisational identities.
Assist in the implementation of IITA’s ten year strategy in so far as it relates to the activities within the Communication Office.
Perform any other activities as may be assigned.

Educational Qualifications
MSc or MA degree in journalism, communications, public affairs, or fields related to agricultural science.

Experience and skills:
Minimum of ten years of relevant, substantial and diverse professional experience in all facets of communication and public affairs.
Proven ability to conceptualise, design and implement major campaigns, strategies and programmes, including those taking advantage of current trends in social media.
Knowledge of international development issues and the communications and positioning challenges of international organisations, particularly the CGIAR.
Experience in communications and the ability to write clear, compelling and diverse English-language communications materials for different audiences.
Capability to work with specialists, often in highly technical areas of research, to write, edit, prepare, and produce communications material.
Sensitivity to the diverse perspectives of various organisations, including the public, private and NGO sector.
Demonstrated ability to work in a multicultural team and under pressure.
Excellence knowledge of modern communication tools and approaches.
Expertise in web-based publishing and marketing.
